We all learnt the Indian Constitution in Grade 3. The Indian Constitution is very important for our country. It acts like a guiding light that helps us be a fair and free nation. In Grade 4, we will learn two important parts of the Indian Constitution called Fundamental Rights and Duties.
Fundamental Rights are special rules that are guaranteed to every citizen of India in order to protect the people of India. They are rules that help us have a good and fair life. Just like you have rules at home or in school to keep things fair and safe. Fundamental Rights are rules for the whole country. They make sure everyone can have their own beliefs, speak their mind, and be treated kindly1.
These rights include:

Before India got independence in 1947, it was ruled by the British for about 200 years. After India became free, some important leaders came together to write rules for the country. These rules are called the Constitution of India, which came into effect in 1950.
One big part of the Constitution is called Fundamental Rights. These are special rights that help people live freely and fairly. They make sure that everyone is treated with respect, no matter who they are. These rules also stop others including the government from being unfair or unkind. It’s like having a guide to help everyone live happily and safely in our country.
Fundamental Duties are a set of moral and ethical responsibilities that every citizen of India has towards the country. Fundamental duties are like promises that every citizen of India makes to help our country3.
They are things we should do to make our country better, like being kind to others, protecting nature, and respecting our country's flag and leaders. They guide us to be good and responsible citizens.3
The idea of incorporating Fundamental Duties into the Indian Constitution was proposed by the Swaran Singh Committee in 19764.
It was believed that just as citizens have rights, they should also have certain responsibilities towards the nation4.
To remind everyone to be good and responsible citizens, they added something called "Fundamental Duties" to the Indian Constitution in 19764.
They help us remember that being a good citizen means not only enjoying our rights but also doing our part to make India a better place for everyone4.
Fundamental Rights protect our freedom, and Fundamental Duties teach us how to be responsible citizens. Together, they make our country India a special and fair place to live.
