In our society, people come from many different backgrounds, with different jobs, homes, and ways of living. Sometimes, these differences lead to unfair treatment. But every person deserves respect, no matter their social class. In this lesson, we will talk about how we can treat everyone equally and stand up against class differences by showing kindness, fairness, and understanding.
The basic idea of human rights is that everyone no matter their class, gender, ability, skin colour, or where they live should be treated equally and given the same opportunities.1
Respect is seen in how we treat each other.1
Respect from others can affect how someone feels about themselves, especially if it comes from someone in a powerful position.
For example, if a person is treated poorly just because they work as a domestic worker, it also decreases their self respect.1
Respect is also important so that people who have been denied chances or rights can get them back. For example, if we think that the child of a driver should continue being a driver, we will not be helping society break through stereotypes and change their reality.1
Policies designed to reduce income inequality will only be successful if they operate from a place of respect.1
There are many big and small things we can do to treat people with more respect. Some of these are listed below.
1. Treat people the way you would like to be treated:
When interacting with someone who comes from a different, especially lower income class than you, treat them like you would treat a friend. This helps establish a good relationship.2
2. Build awareness:
Instead of making assumptions about their reality, it is better to become aware of it. You can do this in many ways like asking them questions, talking about their life, reading about their community amongst others. 2
3. Communicate thoughtfully:
The words we use matter and show how much we respect others. You can be mindful of your tone, body language, and the words you use while talking to everyone. 2
4. Be a champion of dignity:
All jobs are important, and the people who do them should be treated kindly. Additionally, encourage those around you to do the same. 2
Summary:
Treating people with respect is important irrespective of their income/class.
Respect is important to fight inequality.
Treating people like you want to be treated, building awareness, communicating respectfully, being a champion for dignity are some things you can do to be more respectful.
