We often hear comments or jokes about people being “too rich” or “too poor,” or about the kind of jobs their parents do. These ideas are part of something called social class-based stereotypes.
They show up in movies, books, schools, and even in conversations with friends. In this lesson, we will begin to notice and think about these stereotypes and how they affect the way people are seen and treated.
Stereotypes are fixed ideas, images, or exaggerated beliefs that many people have of a particular group of people or things. Very often this is not true for the entire group and may cause hurt and offence1.

There are many stereotypes about people from lower socioeconomic communities. While some of these ideas may be true for a few individuals, they are not true for everyone. Common class-based stereotypes include:3
Class stereotypes are a problem because they maintain inequality in society and prevent people from growing. 4 This inequality is not just monetary (related to money). There is also an unequal distribution of power. Those with more money have more power and in turn more respect. People with less money have less power and respect.4
Children learn these stereotypes from a very young age from their surroundings, books they read, movies they watch, and from adults in their lives. Class stereotypes mostly portray people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds as incompetent4.
While stereotypes are true about a sample of people from a given group, they are most certainly not true about the entire group. There are many people and communities who have challenged these class based stereotypes and proved them wrong. To learn more, see the stories below:

Dharavi is a slum located in Mumbai. Not only is Dharavi one of the biggest slums in India, it is one of the biggest slums in the world. People normally associate slums with small houses, public toilets, filthy streets and low income families 8. While Dharavi may have many problems, there is so much more to Dharavi than the stereotypes people associate with it. Dharavi is home to many small industries that actively contribute to the economy of our nation8.

How Dharavi fought COVID-19
India had a long battle with not just COVID but the many lockdowns that were imposed on citizens across the country. COVID-19 did not discriminate between rich and poor. All were exposed to it. People assumed that if COVID spreads in the slums it will not be possible to contain it. A lot of alarms were raised when COVID started spreading in Dharavi9. Experts too wondered how a place like Dharavi would handle it given the space constraint? How would people isolate? How would they stay at a distance? Once again, the people of Dharavi showed us how to manage this problem beautifully. Their story became popular all over the world.
